PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

On April 19, 2009, Mattapoisett celebrated the inauguration of the first section of the Mattapoisett Rail Trail, The Old Colony Mile. We hope you have had a chance to enjoy this beautiful addition to our town.

The next section, The Shining Tides Mile, (Mattapoisett Neck Road to Depot Street) is fully funded and scheduled for construction in 2011. (See below) But we are getting an early start Summer 2010 with the help of Old Colony High School.

The Friends of the Mattapoisett Bicycle and Recreational Path extend a huge thanks to the private donors, Town Meeting voters, and all supporters who have contributed to this section.

Phase 2: The Mattapoisett Dude Mile (Depot Street to North Street)and The Old Rochester Mile (North Street to the Marion Town Line). Before we can get in line for another round of federal funding we have to complete Phase 1 and do preliminary planning for Phase 2: Surveys, wetland marking and final Route determination.

Town meeting voted 25,000 to fund this work in May 2010. With hard work, the Mattapoisett Rail Trail could be completed at the same time Marion constructs their path, making a the dream of a regional pathway a reality.

Fundraising is ongoing. Local funding is needed for 10% of Phase 2 project costs. Please contribute to the design fund. Visit our website or contact us about memorial benches, the program for educational signage, or other opportunities.

Phase 1A: The Old Colony Mile. Complete

Phase 1b: The Shining Tides Mile Design is underway and being evaluated by MassDOT**. A Public Hearing should occur this summer. Agreements are all but finalized with the YMCA for the route around their property. Mattapoisett Town Meeting approved 35,000 dollars from CPA funds to have Old Colony High School widen the Mattapoisett River Bridge. Work will begin this fall (2010) and when completed save the project half the original bridgewidening cost. The Bridge widening project will be submitted in a National Skills USA competition, potentially winning 10,000 dollars! Bid documents for Phase 1b should be complete in winter 2010 and bidding begin in spring 2011.
